The Core Curriculum that Should be Taught: Catechism of the Catholic Church.

Repenting of the Failure of Parish-Based Catechesis: Time for An Old Idea By Barbara R. Nicolosi, Patheos Catholic, May 29, 2013

It's long past time for the Catholic Church in the United States to acknowledge and address the fact that in many, possibly most, dioceses, parish-based catechesis has been an abject failure. In the vaunted Year of Faith, it should sting all of our leaders and pastors that few of the ever-dwindling percentage of Catholics in the pews on a Sunday morning could pass a basic catechetical quiz.

I would say that Barbara Nicolosi  nails it in stating that our mainstream Catholic in the pew has been deprived of the opportunity to learn the true facts of the Catechism. We have read about the CORE Curriculum going into the Catholic schools about a body of “facts” that Bill and Melinda Gates would like to see in school, but it would be great if the Bishops would take a personal interest priority in seeing the Catholic in the pew develop a well formed conscience starting with the facts of the Catechism of the Catholic Church.  What we have now are dumb programs that leave no common tongue for Catholics to share.  The article is worth the reading time you will invest.

Apostolic Letter Motu Proprio data Porta Fidei of the Supreme Pontiff Benedict XVI for the Indiction of the Year of Faith

“The Church as a whole and all her Pastors, like Christ, must set out to lead people out of the desert, towards the place of life, towards friendship with the Son of God, towards the One who gives us life, and life in abundance.”

This is the mission that is pursued in this Year of Faith, the mission we must equip ourselves for.  Secularism has set out to convince people that God is a myth, that God does not have a say in creation, and that the pursuit of the roots of creation end just at the border where man must acknowledge that he is not God and that God exists.

A Great Gift From the Church During the Year of Faith.

Here is a good opportunity to share the great gift granted to the Church in the form of a plenary indulgence in the Year of Faith.  The article describes very clearly what this means and how to obtain it. Catholics should pray that our bishops provide many opportunities for their faithful to obtain the indulgence for themselves and their loved ones.  Through seeking it, they will be nourished in the teachings of the Church, which they can take to others.
